The Ultimate Brownie Battle: Spelt Flour vs. Almond Flour

Brownie Showdown Spelt vs. Almond Flour – Who Wins

Welcome to our kitchen showdown, where spelt flour and almond flour step into the ring to battle it out for the title of Best Brownie Base. We didn’t just pick any recipes for this bake-off. Oh no! We went all in – grinding our own spelt flour to make a super special brownie recipe and then whipping up a batch using almond flour straight from the store (thanks to the recipe on the back of the package). And who better to judge this delicious duel than our very own kiddo taste-test panel? We’ve got all of this – the mess, the fun, and the yum – caught on video for you to see.

Round 1: The Spelt Flour Special

We started our baking bonanza with spelt flour. Picture this: us, in our kitchen, turning whole spelt grains into flour. Why? Because we wanted our brownies to have that homemade touch that only comes from doing things from scratch. And the recipe? That’s our secret sauce – a concoction we dreamed up to make these brownies stand out.

Round 2: The Almond Flour Challenger

Next up, almond flour. No grinding this time; we let the store do the heavy lifting. We followed the recipe on the almond flour package to the letter, curious to see how it would stack up against our homemade hero. Will the convenience of store-bought flour and a ready-made recipe win out?

Stay tuned as we dive into this floury face-off, complete with our kiddos giving their no-holds-barred opinions on which brownie reigns supreme. Spoiler alert: things might get a little crumbly!

The Nutty Challenger: Almond Flour Brownies

On the other side, we have the almond flour brownies, courtesy of the recipe found on the back of the almond flour package. These brownies bring a modern twist to the classic treat, with a nutty flavor and a light texture that almost melts in your mouth. They’re grain-free, making them a fantastic option for those looking to cut down on gluten without sacrificing taste. Here’s why they’re a game changer:

  • Store-bought Almond Flour: Convenient and ready to turn into something magical.
  • Package Recipe: A tried and tested formula that promises perfection.
  • Lower Carb: Almond flour is known to contain less carb for those carb conscious!

Almond Flour Recipe by Nature’s Eats

Ingredients

1 cup Almond Flour
2 cups creamy almond butter
1 tsp baking powder (you can sub this with 1 tsp baking soda and 1 tbsp vinegar)
Chocolate Chips (optional)
1 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup cacao powder
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 eggs (you can sub this with 2 tbsp flax eggs and 4 tbsp water)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  2. In a large bowl, add almond butter, maple syrup, eggs and vanilla extract. Mix well until you get a smooth texture.
  3. Incorporate the dry ingredients, make sure you mix them well.
  4. Add the chocolate chips to the batter.
  5. Pour the batter in an 8×8 baking pan.
  6. Add more chocolate chips on top and bake for 35 minutes.

Recipe notes: When we made the almond flour brownies we noticed the batter was very sticky and thick. We had to add about 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of water to make the batter be more manageable to mix.

Spelt Flour Brownie vs. Almond Flour Brownie – Which one reigns supreme?

The Verdict: Almond Flour Brownies

After the taste test, the almond flour brownies had a lot to say for themselves, and so did our panel of little judges. Here’s the scoop on how these nutty squares stacked up:

Pros:

  • Simplicity Reigns Supreme: The recipe was a breeze – easy to follow, with no complicated steps. Perfect for when you want a sweet treat without the hassle.
  • A Healthier Twist: Thanks to the almond flour, these brownies come with a lower carb count than their traditional counterparts, making them a guilt-free indulgence (well, almost).
  • Deliciously Nutty: The taste? Spot on! These brownies delivered on flavor, proving that healthier alternatives don’t have to compromise on deliciousness.

Cons:

  • The Price of Perfection: Quality comes at a cost, and in this case, a pretty steep one. The combo of almond flour and almond butter can make your wallet a lot lighter.
  • Texture Troubles: While we loved the nutty flavor, the texture was a tad too sticky, reminiscent of peanut butter clinging for dear life to the roof of your mouth.
  • Grease Lightening: A bit on the greasy side, these brownies left our fingers shining brighter than we’d like, courtesy of the generous amount of almond butter.

Conclusion: A Mixed Bag

The almond flour brownies definitely won us over with their flavor and health benefits, but they also taught us that there’s such a thing as too much of a good thing (looking at you, almond butter). They’re a fantastic option for those watching their carb intake and don’t mind splurging a bit on quality ingredients. However, if you’re not a fan of greasy fingers and the unique texture of nut butters, you might want to keep a napkin handy!

Stay tuned for how the spelt flour brownies fared in our kitchen showdown. Will they rise to the occasion or crumble under the pressure? Spoiler: It’s going to be close.

The Verdict: Spelt Flour Brownies

While the spelt flour brownies have many pros, it’s only fair to consider the other side of the coin. Here are some points to keep in mind:

Pros:

  • Fudgy Chocolate Heaven: These brownies deliver on the promise of a decadent, melt-in-your-mouth experience. For anyone craving a chocolatey, fudgy treat, look no further.
  • Easy-Peasy Baking: The recipe is straightforward and a breeze to whip up, making these brownies a joy to bake on any day.
  • More to Love: Not only does the spelt flour recipe yield a deliciously rich treat, but it also makes a larger batch compared to its almond flour counterpart. This means more brownies to go around, making it perfect for gatherings or simply ensuring you have enough treats to last through the week.
  • Cost-Effective Indulgence: In stark contrast to the almond flour brownies, these spelt flour delights offer a more budget-friendly option without sacrificing taste or quality. You get to enjoy a larger batch of brownies for less, making it an economical choice for satisfying your sweet tooth.

Cons:

  • Molasses Flavor: One of the secret ingredients that give these brownies their rich, fudgy texture is molasses. While it adds a deep caramel flavor, not everyone is a fan of its distinctive taste. If you’re not into molasses, this might be a deal-breaker.
  • Ultra-Fudgy Texture: These brownies are the epitome of fudgy, which is usually a big win. However, for folks who prefer their brownies a bit more cake-like or less intense, these might come across as too much of a good thing.
  • A Bit of Grit: Making our own spelt flour means these brownies get a bit of homemade charm, including a few grainy bits. While we love the rustic texture, it can result in a slightly flaky finish that might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Conclusion: A Delight with Caveats

The spelt flour brownies bring a lot to the table: they’re fudgy, chocolatey, and come with the satisfaction of being homemade. Plus, they’re more economical and serve more people. However, they might not be for everyone. The use of molasses and the ultra-fudgy texture, combined with the occasional grainy bit from home-ground flour, could sway some preferences.

In the grand scheme of things, choosing between spelt and almond flour brownies might boil down to personal taste and dietary considerations. The almond flour version offers a lower-carb, nutty alternative, while the spelt flour brownies cater to those craving a rich, decadent chocolate experience with a homemade touch.

Don’t forget to watch our video to see the fun, the baking, and the taste testing that went into this delicious experiment. Whichever type of brownie you prefer, we hope you find joy in the baking process and even more in the tasting. Happy baking!
